Meet SUE BIRKAM
“Goals are Dreams With Deadlines”
- Diana Scharf Hunt
This post from Sue Birkam,
. . . will be on goal setting, visioning or planning an outcome and looking at the gap. In other words looking at where you are in relationship to your goal or goals, where you would like to be and when, how to measure your progress toward your goal and what is the gap from here to there.
Sue Birkam, “Goal Setting: Be in alignment”
When establishing your goals it’s a good reminder to be certain that your goals are in alignment with your values. If you value flexibility in your life an example of a misaligned goal might be a goal that places you in an inflexible situation, job or being over committed.
Sue Birkam, “What is your driver?”
What is your driving force behind your goal? Purpose is the reason but motivation is the underlying driver. I will be authoring my first book soon. My purpose is to assist others in understanding where their limiting beliefs came from and how to eliminate those that do not serve them any longer. This is my purpose, but the motivator is seeing the word author next to my name and to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming published. That is my motivation for my goal. It’s important to know not only your goal’s purpose but also to understand what will drive you toward fulfilling your goal, Sue Birkam, Author. Give your goal a title.
Sue Birkam, “The Outcome”
Establishing your vision or what type of outcome you wish to have for each of your goals is also a key ingredient. By knowing what the end game is allows you to use visioning in a more complete way. An example of this is using the completion of my
book to create a larger vision of the outcome of potential workshops, group coaching programs and speaking engagements once the book is completed. Write down your vision and outcome. What is the endgame for your goal?
Sue Birkam, “Evaluate”
The next step is honestly evaluating where you are today in relationship to fulfilling your goal, your starting point. Using my example I am about fifty percent finished with the first draft of my first book. Reviewing where you are today helps to set the stage for measuring your progress.
Sue Birkam, “Measuring /Creating Benchmarks”
Measuring your progress is individual. Ask of yourself, how I will know when I’ve met my objectives and what are the ways in which I will measure my progress? You set the standards of measurement against your ultimate completion. Do you want weekly measurable, daily measurable, quarterly measurable or annual. It’s up to you. This provides your own accountability for being able to meet your objectives leading to the completion of your goal.
Sue Birkam, “Celebrate your benchmarks”
Determining how you will reward yourself when you’ve met the incremental benchmarks you’ve established is also important. This can be as simple as doing something out of the ordinary for yourself or something you put off doing for yourself its’ a time to celebrate.
